Degar (Montgnard)
To the Vienamese they are known as highlanders, but they are called "Moi", or savages.
The Degar (referred to by French colonists as Montagnard meaning "mountain people") are the indigenous peoples of the Central Highlands of Vietnam.
Montagnard was the term, typically shortened to "Yard", used by U.S. military personnel in the Central Highlands during the Vietnam War. However the term has been viewed as derogatory and the official term now used means "minority people".
They call themselves Degar, a name coined by those who fought in the forest for their freedom.
- Degar means Sons of the mountains.
- The Degar race are the first people group to inhabit the region known to the world as the Central Highlands of Vietnam during the Second Indochina War (Vietnam War).
